How to Measure Your Dachshund’s Neck, Chest and Back Length For Perfect-Fit Apparel
Every dachshund owner knows how tricky shopping for dog clothes can be.
Standard generic pet clothing is crafted for ordinary dog builds, completely ignoring the elongated spine, deep chest and unique low-slung physique that define dachshunds. Ill-fitting garments end up squeezing their neck, riding up their lengthy backs, restricting daily movement and even putting extra strain on their delicate spinal area.
We created Long back Studio exclusively for dachshunds. We developed our Mini, Tweenie and Standard three-size system based on data collected from hundreds of real dachshunds. This straightforward measurement tutorial will walk you through three essential measurements: neck girth, chest circumference and full back length, helping you pick the most suitable size effortlessly.
Essential Tools You Will Need
You only require a flexible soft measuring tape; avoid rigid rulers which cause inaccurate readings.
Make sure your dachshund stands naturally, keep their posture relaxed without slouching or stretching excessively for precise data.
Step-by-Step Measurement Instructions

Neck Girth
Wrap the measuring tape loosely around the base of your dog’s neck, the regular collar placement spot.
Do not pull the tape overly tight. Leave a tiny amount of breathing space, this reserved gap matches the relaxed neck cut of our hoodies, coats and raincoats.
Full Chest Circumference
Measure around the widest part of the deep chest, right behind their front legs.
Chest size acts as our primary sizing reference. Our raincoats and padded jackets feature adjustable chest panels. Minor measurement differences of several centimetres are easily accommodated thanks to the flexible adjustable design.
Total Back Length
Start the tape at the base of the neck all the way down to the base of their tail.
Back length is the most critical dimension for dachshunds. Our extended rear hem construction covers their entire spine, preventing fabric from creeping upwards during walking or running.
Understand Our Three Core Size Categories

We tailor all apparel to fit three mainstream dachshund body types popular across the US and Europe
Miniature Dachshund
The compact small build designed for petite long-body dachshunds
Tweenie Dachshund
The intermediate middle size, the most common body type among family-raised dachshunds
Standard Dachshund
Larger sturdy frame built for full-size purebred standard dachshunds
If your dog’s measurements fall between two sizes, always prioritise your chest measurement to finalise your choice.
